The ringing in her ears started one afternoon when the weather was changing and the air cried out the warning of a storm. It never left her. In fact, it was the last thing she heard.

“I wish I just had a moment or two of silence” she thought some days when there was so much hustle and bustle. “Maybe a whole afternoon of quiet and peace.” The joy in her family was her greatest pleasure. A noisy household was something she always knew she’d wanted. It wasn’t that she didn’t love the chaos. She had plenty of time to enjoy quiet now that all of the kids were in school. The truth was she never took a moment to enjoy it.

As the pressure changed that afternoon and the clouds built on the horizon, the electricity was palpable. Chalking it up to a Spring storm, she gathered her weeds that she had pulled and put her tools away in the greenhouse. She headed inside only after she made sure the teacup cows were headed into their shed, the horses into theirs, and the chickens were closed up tight. It felt like the wind was going to pick up. A small Spring storm could churn up wild pretty fast in the valley. Her heart quickened at the thought of it. Her pulse began to race as she calculated the mountain of things yet to be done today.
